GOOD vs. WELL 

Question: “Should I say, ‘We played well’ or ‘We played good’ inquired a caller with a penchant for basketball.” 

Answer: After commending her on a game well played, I informed her that she should say, “We played well.” “Good” and “Well” may be the two most misused words in the English language. “Good” is an adjective. It can only modify nouns and pronouns. “Well” is an adverb. It can only modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Too many people use “good”, the adjective, when they need “well”, the adverb.

I scored good on my math test. (incorrect)

The new car runs good. (incorrect)  

In each example, the adjective “good” modifies a verb, “scored” and “runs” respectively. Only adverbs modify verbs. These situations call for the adverb “well”.

I scored well on my math test. (correct)

The new car runs well. (correct)

Note: In English the mistakes in the use of adjectives-adverbs to express ideas are unfortunately very common. A similar problem as shown in “good-well” can be noted in “quick-quickly,” “bad, badly,” “real-very,” and others.

Obs.: Este é um problema gramatical que não tem paralelo na língua portuguesa. No idioma português ninguém confunde o adjetivo “Good” (“Bom”) com o advérbio “Well” (“Bem”) na construção das frases, pois o seu uso não faria sentido.

“Ele jogou bem”. (“He played well.”) – CORRETO

“Ele jogou bom”. (“He played good.”) – NÃO FAZ SENTIDO

O mesmo, porém, não ocorre na língua inglesa, como pode ser visto no exemplo abaixo.

Pergunta: “Deve-se dizer ‘We played well’ (‘Nós jogamos bem’) ou ‘“We played good’ (‘Nós jogamos bom’), perguntou alguém com uma queda pelo basquetebol.

Resposta: Depois de elogiá-la pela excelente partida, eu informei que devemos dizer “We played well” (“Nós jogamos bem”). “Good” e “Well” são duas das palavras mais mal usadas na língua inglesa. “Good” é um adjetivo, e pode modificar ou qualificar apenas substantivos e pronomes. “Well” é um advérbio, e pode modificar apenas verbos, adjetivos ou outros advérbios. Muita gente usa “good”, o adjetivo, quando devia usar “well”, o advérbio.

The new car runs good (O carro novo funciona bom) – INCORRETO

I scored well on my math test (Eu fui bem no teste de matemática) – CORRETO

Em cada um dos exemplos, o adjetivo “good” está modificando um verbo, respectivamente “scored” e “runs”, mas apenas advérbios modificam verbos. Nas duas situações devemos usar o advérbio “well”.

Nota: Em inglês, o erro na utilização de adjetivos ou advérbios para expressar ideias é infelizmente muito comum. Um problema similar a este “good-well” pode ser visto em “quick-quickly” (“rápido-rapidamente”), “bad-badly” (mau-de uma forma ruim”), “real-really” (verdadeiro-na verdade…”) e muitos outros.
