THE COPIOUS DRINKER AND HER PILE  

Question: “Is this ad correct?” asked an astute beer drinker. “It reads, ‘She is sitting among a pile of beer cans.’”

Answer: Structurally, “among a pile” is correct, but logically it doesn’t make sense. You can not sit “among a pile”, which is defined as a single heap. You can sit “on” a pile or “next to” a pile or “between two piles” but not “among” one. The sentence needs to be reworded:

She is sitting among many beer cans.

She is sitting on a pile of beer cans.

She is sitting in the midst of many beer cans.

Any of these will work. Why was she there anyway? Doesn’t she have better things to do with her time? And who drank all that beer? The possibilities boggle the mind.

A GRANDE BEBEDORA E A CERVEJA EMPILHADA

Pergunta: “Isto está correto?” perguntou um bebedor de cerveja esperto. “Está escrito ‘Ela está sentada entre uma pilha de cervejas’”.  

Resposta: A sentença “sentada entre uma pilha de cervejas” não faz sentido dentro da lógica. Você não pode se sentar “entre uma pilha”, pois “uma pilha” define uma única unidade. Você pode se sentar “numa pilha”, ou “perto de uma pilha” ou “entre duas pilhas”, mas não “entre uma pilha”. A sentença necessita ser refeita:

Ela está sentada entre muitas latas de cerveja.

Ela está sentada numa pilha de latas de cervejas.

Ela está sentada no meio de muitas latas de cerveja.

Nota: “Among” e “between” são traduzidas indistintamente como “entre” na língua portuguesa. Usa-se “among” quando você se refere a estar entre mais de duas coisas e “between” quando vocè se refere a estar entre apenas duas coisas:

She distributed the candies among the twelve children (Ela distribuiu os doces entre as doze crianças).

She distributed the candies between the two children (Ela distribuiu os doces entre as duas crianças).
