POPPYCOCK 

Have you ever listened to somebody trying to talk about something that they know absolutely nothing about? Like, you know that what they’re saying is completely untrue, yet they insist in continuing to talk? It’s highly likely that they’re talking POPPYCOCK.

No laughing! POPPYCOCK has nothing to do with “poppies” (a type of flower) or “cocks” (a male bird or a slang term for a man’s intimate body parts!).

POPPYCOCK actually came from the Dutch word “pappekak” which is made from “pap” (soft) and “kak” (poop!). It’s been part of English since the 1800’s. There’s another word more commonly used in analogous situations, but equally inelegant – BULLSHIT!      

 

            “ – Hey, did you know that if you keep your eyes open when you sneeze your eyes will fly out?
               – What a load of poppycock!”

             “The speech made by the consultant was nothing more than a lot of poppycock!”

Você já ouviu alguém tentando falar a respeito de algo que desconhecia totalmente? – ou seja, você sabe que o que a pessoa está falando é totalmente sem sentido, mas ela insiste em continuar falando? É bastante provável que essa pessoa esteja falando ASNEIRAS (coisas de asnos). Vale explicar que a palavra inglesa “poppycock” não tem nada a ver com “poppy” (papoula) nem com “cock” (uma ave macho, como o galo, ou uma gíria que define o membro masculino). “Poppycock” na verdade veio do holandês “pappekak”, uma junção de “pap” (mole, macio) e “kak” (cocô), e faz parte do vocabulário inglês desde o início dos anos 1800. Existe uma outra palavra mais comumente usada em situações análogas, mas igualmente deselegante – “bullshit” (bosta de boi).

“ – Hey, você sabia que se você mantiver os olhos abertos quando espirra os seus olhos vão voar pra fora?”

   – Quanta besteira!!!”    

“A palestra dada pelo consultor não passou de um montão de asneiras!”
