GERRYMANDERING
GERRYMANDERING means to divide (a state, school,
district, etc.) into political units that give one group an unfair advantage.
It comes from the words “Gerry” and “Salamander” (“Gerrymander”) on which “Gerry”
is Governor Elbridge Gerry (Massachusets, 1810-1812) and “Salamander” is the
area of the district, that resembled to this animal. Elbridge Gerry became
famous when decided to rearrange the state’s voting districts to benefit his
party.
“There has been a lot of GERRYMANDERING of the
constituency boundaries.”
“The Court ruled in 2014, after lengthy testimony, that
at least two districts had to be redrawn because of GERRYMANDERING.”
“He
was reelected six times, but in 1890 was defeated by the GERRYMANDERING of his
district.”
