English words that people say wrong and use wrong

POISONOUS   

Wrong meaning: Something that will make you poisoned if you eat it, or if it bites you. 

Right meaning: Something that will poison you, but only if you eat it. 

People often think the words “POISONOUS” and “VENOMOUS” mean the same thing. And they do both deal with POISON, a substance that will make you sick or even kill you. The difference is in the way the POISON is administered (given).   

POISONOUS is used for anything that will poison you when you ingest (eat) it.   

VENOMOUS is used for anything that will poison you if it bites you.    

This is why murderers on TV shows use POISON to kill their victims, they don’t use VENOM. Another example is the pufferfish, the Japanese delicacy, which is a POISONOUS fish – it can kill you if you eat it (and yet many people do still eat it!). A snake that can poison you, on the other hand, is VENOMOUS. Unless you bite it first, we guess.

As pessoas geralmente pensam que as palavras da língua inglesa “POISONOUS” (venenoso) e “VENOMOUS” (venenoso) significam a mesma coisa. É que ambas têm a ver com “POISON” (veneno) uma substância que poderá lhe fazer mal ou até matá-lo. A diferença está na forma como esse veneno é administrado ou ingerido.  

POISONOUS é usado para alguma coisa que pode te envenenar se você comer (ingerir).

VENOMOUS é usado para alguma coisa que vai te envenenar se você por mordido, picado ou tiver contato com por ela.

Essa é a razão pela qual os criminosos dos programas de televisão usam POISON (veneno), não VENOM (veneno), para matar as suas vítimas. Outro exemplo é o baiacu, um peixe usado na culinária japonesa, que é POISONOUS (venenoso) – você pode até morrer se comer (e mesmo assim muita gente come!). Uma cobra que pode envenenar você, por outro lado, é VENOMOUS.
